Grades and Grading
Canvas Basics
Grading in Canvas
Grades can serve as a communication tool between students and instructors and allow instructors to track the progress of students. Canvas offers tools to help efficiently grade online alone or with a teaching team of other instructors and/or teaching assistants.
- SpeedGrader is Canvas' built-in tool to grade quizzes and assignments.
- Gradebook allows instructors to easily input, manage, and release grades to students.
Using the Gradebook
The Gradebook helps instructors easily view and enter grades for students. Depending on the Grade display type, grades for each assignment can be viewed as points, percentages, complete or incomplete, GPA scale, or letter grade.

Finalizing Grades
Grading assignments can be time-consuming, so we strongly recommend working ahead to prepare your gradebook throughout the semester to ensure all scores and grades are updated in the Canvas gradebook before they are posted to student transcripts.
